The State Theatre opened in 1921 on Hennepin Avenue as a movie palace, part of downtown Minneapolis's early 20th-century theater district. Architect J.R. Davidson designed the building in the Renaissance Revival style typical of the era's movie palaces. After decades as a cinema, the theater was restored as a live performance venue and now operates under Hennepin Theatre Trust, alongside the nearby Orpheum and Pantages theaters. Its marquee has displayed "The Overseer: Divinity and Humanity," an installation by artist Reggie Leflore, paired with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.
