Calvin Horton Jr Vigil on July 21, 2020
July 21, 2020Lake StreetMinneapolis, MN
March and vigil on July 21, 2029 on Lake Street in Minneapolis, MN, outside Cadillac Pawn & Jewelry, demanding charges against the shop's owner, John Rieple, who shot and killed Calvin Horton Jr. on May 27, 2020. The vigil marked what would have been Horton Jr.'s 44th birthday.
Horton was shot during the civil unrest that swept Minneapolis in the days following the May 25, 2020, death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. Rieple was not charged at the time, and by the date of the march, 55 days had passed since the shooting with no criminal action taken against him. Protesters carried signs calling for Rieple to be charged with murder and directed the march toward the home of Minneapolis City Council member Alondra Cano.
Speakers at the outdoor gathering outside the boarded-up pawn shop included Toussaint Morrison and Mae Roberts, Horton Jr.'s mother. The plywood boards protecting Cadillac Pawn's storefront were covered with graffiti, memorial posters bearing Horton Jr.'s image, and handwritten calls for justice.
