Milwaukee sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan, the only Great Lake located entirely within the United States. The city's downtown skyline rises along the lake's edge, a cluster of office towers and condominiums built up through the 20th century as Milwaukee grew into a shipping and manufacturing hub. Lake Michigan itself covers about 22,300 square miles and reaches depths near 925 feet, making it the second-largest of the five Great Lakes by volume. Riprap shoreline and public paths like this one are common along Milwaukee's lakefront parks, part of a decades-long effort to stabilize the coast against erosion while keeping it accessible to residents.
