The Speedway station at 38th Street and Chicago Avenue sits at the center of George Floyd Square, the memorial and protest zone that formed after George Floyd's killing on May 25, 2020. The station's exterior remained covered in murals, signage, and hand-painted messages left by visitors throughout the occupation. Chicago Avenue itself stayed closed to through traffic for months as the intersection functioned as an autonomous community space independent of city control.
