Mahmoud Abumayyaleh at Cup Foods After Its Reopening

Cup Foods sits at the corner of East 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, the site where George Floyd died on May 25, 2020. Mahmoud Abumayyaleh, whose family has owned the store since 1990, closed the business in the aftermath and reopened it weeks later amid the memorial that grew around the intersection. The surrounding area, known as George Floyd Square, remained a gathering place for mourners and protesters through the summer of 2020, with barricades limiting vehicle traffic at the intersection for more than a year afterward.
