The Basilica of Saint Mary, dedicated in 1926, was the first basilica named in the United States and serves as co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Designed by Emmanuel Louis Masqueray in the Beaux-Arts style, the building sits at the corner of Hennepin Avenue and 17th Street. Its dome rises roughly 224 feet, a scale that has made stone and copper repairs an ongoing undertaking for the parish. Restoration campaigns over the decades have addressed weathering of the limestone exterior and upkeep of the twin towers flanking the entrance.
