The Eiffel Tower stands at the center of this aerial view over Paris, France, near the Champ de Mars in the 7th arrondissement. Completed in 1889 for the World's Fair, the tower was designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and rises 330 meters. The dense grid of Haussmann-era boulevards and buildings surrounding it dates largely to the mid-to-late 19th century urban redevelopment of Paris under Napoleon III. The gilded dome visible to the east belongs to Les Invalides, a complex built in the 17th century that now houses the Musée de l'Armée and Napoleon's tomb. The La Défense business district appears on the horizon, home to Paris's principal cluster of high-rise office towers.
