U.S. Steel Gary Works and South Shore Line, Gary, Indiana

U.S. Steel's Gary Works sits along the southern shore of Lake Michigan in Gary, Indiana, and remains one of the largest integrated steel mills in North America. The company built the plant starting in 1906, along with the city of Gary itself, to house workers and supply blast-furnace steel for the growing Midwest rail and manufacturing industries. The brick administration building in view dates to the mill's early construction era and once served as its main office complex. South Shore Line commuter trains, operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, run on the electrified line that passes directly in front of the plant, connecting Gary to Chicago's Millennium Station. The rail corridor has carried passenger service since 1908, making it one of the oldest continuously operated interurban lines in the country.
