Trail Signs at Ensign Peak, Salt Lake City

Ensign Peak rises to 5,414 feet above the Salt Lake Valley, just north of the Utah State Capitol. Latter-day Saint pioneers climbed it in July 1847, days after entering the valley, to survey the land Brigham Young had chosen for settlement; the peak takes its name from that founding association with the Mormon "ensign" or standard. The site is now preserved as Ensign Peak Nature Park, managed by Salt Lake City, with a trail leading to the summit from Ensign Vista Drive. City Creek Canyon, referenced on the lower marker, lies just east of the peak and has served as a water source and recreation corridor for the city since the 19th century.
