Eiffel Tower and La Défense above Paris, France — The Eiffel Tower stands over the Champ de Mars in Paris’s 7th arrondissement, with La Défense on the western horizon. Built by Gustave Eiffel’s company for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, the tower remains one of Paris’s most recognizable landmarks.

It is owned by the City of Paris and operated by the Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel. The tower draws close to seven million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited paid monuments in the world.
