Dayton's department store, founded in 1902 by George Draper Dayton, was long known for its elaborate Christmas window displays along Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. The flagship store's holiday windows became a seasonal tradition for generations of Minnesota families, drawing crowds each year to view animated figures and winter-themed dioramas. Santa Bear, a plush mascot introduced by Dayton's in 1985, became a signature part of the retailer's holiday marketing and merchandise line. The building later operated under the Marshall Field's and Macy's names before redevelopment into a mixed-use retail and office complex.
