The Riverfront Heritage Trail runs beneath a steel rail trestle along the Missouri River in Kansas City. The trail network links downtown Kansas City, Missouri, with the West Bottoms, the River Market, and Kansas City, Kansas, connecting more than twenty miles of paved paths through the metro's riverfront districts. The steel trestle overhead once carried freight rail lines serving the industrial warehouses and rail yards that defined the West Bottoms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today the trail is maintained for cyclists and pedestrians as part of a broader effort to reclaim former industrial rail corridors along the river for public use.
