George Floyd Square formed at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue after George Floyd was killed there on May 25, 2020, prompting the city to barricade the area to vehicle traffic. Cup Foods, the corner store where the fatal police encounter began, sits at the center of the site. A "Keep Cup Closed" sign a push by some community members to keep the store shuttered rather than let it reopen for business. Volunteers have used the square to distribute free food and other supplies to residents throughout the ongoing occupation.
