The I-35W Stormwater Storage Facility is a MnDOT project built to capture and hold highway runoff before it's released into the municipal drainage system. Crews excavate rock and soil to form underground storage chambers, using compact equipment such as a Caterpillar 308 excavator suited to confined tunnel work. Rebar cages and poured concrete arches reinforce each section as the excavation advances. Once complete, the facility is intended to manage stormwater volume along the I-35W corridor and reduce flooding in nearby areas of Minneapolis.
