The BP Whiting Refinery sits along Lake Michigan in Whiting, Indiana, roughly 15 miles southeast of downtown Chicago. Standard Oil built the plant in 1889, and it remains the largest refinery in the Midwest, with a crude processing capacity of about 435,000 barrels per day. The facility runs heavily on Canadian crude oil, converting it into gasoline, diesel, and asphalt for distribution across the region. BP has operated the refinery since its 1998 merger with Amoco, which had controlled the site following Standard Oil's court-ordered breakup in 1911.
