BP Whiting Refinery at Dusk, Whiting, Indiana

The BP Whiting Refinery sits along Lake Michigan in Whiting, Indiana, roughly 15 miles southeast of downtown Chicago. Built in 1889 by Standard Oil, it's the sixth-largest refinery in the United States and the largest inland from the Gulf Coast, with a crude processing capacity of about 435,000 barrels per day. The complex draws heavily on Canadian crude, refining it into gasoline, diesel, and asphalt for markets across the Midwest. BP has operated the site since the 1998 merger of BP and Amoco, which had owned the refinery after Standard Oil's breakup in 1911.
