Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia in Higüey, Dominican Republic, with a tall concrete tower
The Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia in Higüey, Dominican Republic, stands as a significant Catholic pilgrimage site. Completed in 1971, its distinctive modernist design by French architects André-Jacques Dunoyer de Segonzac and Pierre Dupré features soaring concrete arches and geometric forms intended to represent hands in prayer. The basilica was commissioned to honor the Virgin of Altagracia, the protector of the Dominican people, and it holds the status of a Minor Basilica. Its 80-meter bell tower and monumental entrance arch draw thousands of visitors, particularly for the Feast of Altagracia on January 21.
