“Abolish the Police” Sign Among Candles at George Floyd Square

George Floyd Square sits at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in South Minneapolis, where George Floyd was killed by police on May 25, 2020. In the months that followed, the intersection was closed to through traffic and maintained by neighbors and volunteers as a memorial, filled with handmade signs, flowers, and candles left in Floyd's memory. "Abolish the police" one of the demands that circulated widely among activists in the wake of his death, calling for major structural changes to policing rather than reform.
