Calle Madero at Night, Mexico City

Calle Madero runs through the Centro Histórico of Mexico City, linking the Zócalo to the Alameda Central near the Torre Latinoamericana. The city closed the street to vehicle traffic in 2010, turning it into a pedestrian corridor lined with jewelry shops, opticians, and retail storefronts occupying early 20th-century buildings. Many of the structures along the route date to the Porfiriato era, when the street was known as Plateros before being renamed for rary leader Francisco I. Madero. The corridor remains one of the most heavily trafficked pedestrian routes in the historic center, connecting to Mexico City's ongoing preservation efforts for the district, which UNESCO designated a World Heritage Site in 1987.
