George Floyd Square sits at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in South Minneapolis, where police officer Derek Chauvin killed George Floyd on May 25, 2020. Community members barricaded the intersection in the weeks that followed, and it remained closed to through traffic for more than a year as it evolved into a memorial and gathering space. Hand-lettered signs, artwork, and flowers accumulated around the site, left by residents and visitors from across the country. Cup Foods, the store where an employee reported Floyd for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill, still stands at the corner and remains part of the memorial grounds.
