George Floyd Square sits at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, where George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after being pinned by police officer Derek Chauvin. In the aftermath, community members closed the intersection to traffic and built a memorial of flowers, candles, and hand-painted signs that has been continuously maintained and expanded since. The area was informally renamed George Floyd Square, and Minneapolis city crews did not fully reopen it to vehicle traffic until June 2021. A raised fist sculpture and a rotating collection of memorial art remain fixtures at the site.
