Burrell was convicted of murder in 2002, and his case has drawn widespread calls for exoneration due to concerns about the conviction. George Floyd Square, located at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, became a memorial and a site for ongoing protests and advocacy following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020.
