The University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus sits along the Mississippi River, split between the East Bank and West Bank districts in Minneapolis. Founded in 1851, it's the flagship campus of the university system and one of the largest in the country, enrolling more than 50,000 students. The Washington Avenue Bridge, seen crossing the river here, links the East and West Bank campuses and carries both vehicle and pedestrian traffic along with a light-rail line. Saint Anthony Falls, the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi, lies just downstream and once powered the flour mills that built Minneapolis's early economy.
