On April 11, 2021, Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kim Potter fatally shot Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, MN, a suburb of Minneapolis. Potter later said she intended to draw her Taser but fired her handgun instead. Wright died at the scene.
Within hours, protesters gathered outside the Brooklyn Center Police Department on 69th Avenue North. Law enforcement deployed riot gear, tear gas, and less-lethal munitions to disperse the crowds. The Minnesota Department of Transportation closed Interstate 694 in both directions near Brooklyn Center as the unrest spread. The Minnesota National Guard was mobilized and arrived near the police headquarters that night to support local officers.
The killing came during the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd, which was underway at the Hennepin County Government Center roughly ten miles away. Kim Potter was charged with first and second-degree manslaughter and was convicted in December 2021.
