Charleroi

Charleroi is an industrial city in the Sambre valley of southern Belgium, built on coal mining and heavy manufacturing that expanded through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Charleroi basin was one of Belgium’s principal industrial regions, sustaining coal-fired power generation, steelmaking, and a regional rail network that connected workers and freight across the area. The coal-fired power station at Monceau-sur-Sambre, on the outskirts of the city, was typical of this industrial infrastructure and operated until the early 2000s before closing as Belgium wound down coal generation. Post-war modernization efforts extended to regional rail, where diesel multiple units built in the early 1950s replaced older rolling stock on Belgian lines before themselves falling out of service. What remains today is a post-industrial landscape of closed plants, disused tracks, and standing structures reclaimed by vegetation.
