Parley's Canyon carries Interstate 80 through the Wasatch Range between Salt Lake City and Park City, following a route first used as a toll road in the 1860s by Parley P. Pratt, an early Mormon leader for whom the canyon is named. The canyon holds Mountain Dell Reservoir, a Salt Lake City water supply source, along with the watershed lands that surround it. Signs posted throughout the canyon warn against dumping building material, tires, hazardous waste, and other debris, a rule enforced to protect the reservoir and surrounding watershed from contamination. Violations of the ordinance carry criminal penalties under Salt Lake City watershed protection code.
