Hillside Home Above Salt Lake Valley, Ensign Peak

Ensign Peak rises on the northern edge of Salt Lake City, part of the range that separates the valley from City Creek Canyon. At an elevation of about 5,414 feet, it takes its name from an 1847 Mormon pioneer tradition of raising a flag from its summit to claim the valley below. Homes built along its lower slopes look out over the Salt Lake Valley and the Wasatch Range to the east and south. The valley floor holds the bulk of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, with the Oquirrh Mountains forming the western boundary roughly 20 miles across the basin.
