A Blue Lives Matter rally in Woodbury, Minnesota drew both supporters of law enforcement and counter-protesters carrying Black Lives Matter signs on August 8, 2020. The gathering took place near a Veterans Memorial, where attendees displayed Thin Blue Line flags and "Back the Blue" messaging while others pushed back openly against that position.
The rally came roughly two and a half months after George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020, an event that set off sustained protests across the Twin Cities and well beyond. By August, the immediate upheaval in Minneapolis had shifted into a longer argument about policing, accountability and what reform should look like — and rallies in support of law enforcement had begun appearing in suburban communities around the metro as a direct response.
Woodbury, a largely white suburb east of Saint Paul, was an unlikely flash point, but its location and demographics made it a legible stage for that counter-mobilization. The presence of openly carried firearms alongside competing signs marked the rally as something more charged than a simple show of support, with the two sides separated by little more than distance and volume.
