The Torture Museum sits among the novelty attractions of downtown Wisconsin Dells, a stretch of the city built almost entirely around tourism since the mid-20th century. Museums of this type typically present replicas of medieval and early modern devices — racks, iron maidens, stocks — alongside written accounts of their historical use. Wisconsin Dells draws several million visitors a year, and its main strip mixes water parks with wax museums, haunted houses, and similar paid attractions aimed at foot traffic. The pointing-hand sign style is a common design choice for storefront museums along the strip, meant to catch pedestrians walking past competing businesses.
