The Westin Peachtree Plaza opened in 1976 as the tallest hotel in the world, a title it held for years after its debut. Architect John Portman designed the cylindrical tower, drawing on the same glass-and-atrium style he used at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta a few blocks away. The building rises 73 stories and 723 feet, making it one of the tallest hotels in the Western Hemisphere. Its Sun Dial restaurant, a rotating structure near the top, has long served as an observation deck for views across the city.
