Fruen MillMinneapolis, MN

The Fruen Mill is an abandoned industrial complex along Bassett Creek in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis, and one of the few surviving remnants of the city's pre-Mississippi milling era. William H. Fruen established a workshop on the site in 1872 to manufacture screws and waterwheel governors, then began milling grain using water power in 1894.

The business grew into a significant cereal producer and was among the earliest manufacturers of packaged breakfast foods in Minneapolis, part of a broader shift away from flour milling that reshaped the city's industrial character in the late nineteenth century. A fire destroyed the original mill and workshop in 1920, and most of the surviving buildings date from the reconstruction that followed. ConAgra acquired the property in 1971 and ceased milling operations, leaving the complex vacant. Decades without use have left the interiors open to the elements, with broken windows throughout and milling-era equipment still in place, and the site has become well known among graffiti writers and urban explorers, its walls and stairwells heavily layered with paint.

Fruen Mill sits along Bassett Creek in Minneapolis, where William H. Fruen built a workshop in 1872 to manufacture screws and waterwheel governors. He converted the operation to water-powered grain milling in 1894, and the business grew into one of the city's earliest breakfast cereal producers. A 1920 fire destroyed the original mill and workshop, and most of the standing complex dates to the rebuilding that followed. ConAgra purchased the property in 1971, and milling operations ended soon after. The lower levels housed the mechanical works that once ran the mill — drive shafts, gears, and support columns built to carry heavy equipment above.

Fruen Mill sits along Bassett Creek in Minneapolis, built by William H. Fruen, who began operating a workshop at the site in 1872 before converting it to grain milling in 1894. The business became one of the city's early cereal producers, part of a wave of Minneapolis mills that shifted from flour to packaged breakfast foods in the late 19th century. A 1920 fire destroyed the original mill and workshop, and the surviving buildings largely date to the reconstruction that followed. ConAgra acquired the property in 1971, after which milling operations ceased. Equipment like the elevator leg protection panels, used to monitor grain-handling machinery for slipping belts and overheated bearings, remains inside the complex as a record of its milling-era operations.

The Fruen Mill sits along Bassett Creek in Minneapolis, one of the city's earliest industrial sites. William H. Fruen set up a workshop there in 1872 to manufacture screws and waterwheel governors, then added grain milling powered by the creek in 1894. The operation expanded into cereal production and ranked among Minneapolis's first breakfast cereal manufacturers. A 1920 fire destroyed the original mill and workshop, and most of the standing complex today dates to the rebuilding that followed. ConAgra purchased the property in 1971, after which milling ceased, leaving the buildings as one of the few surviving industrial complexes tied to Bassett Creek's manufacturing history.
