Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge in Loring Park, Minneapolis
Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge in Loring Park, Minneapolis.
The Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge links Loring Park to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and Walker Art Center, carrying pedestrians and cyclists over the sunken lanes of Interstate 94/394. Artist Siah Armajani designed the span, which opened in 1988 and is named for a longtime Minneapolis park board commissioner and philanthropist. In the distance, the copper dome of the Basilica of Saint Mary rises above the skyline; completed in 1926 and designed by Emmanuel Masqueray, it was the first basilica established in the United States and remains co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
