South Dakota

Badlands, Black Hills, and Custer State Park across multiple trips

July 1, 2017 - July 6, 2019

South Dakota’s west side has been a recurring base for backcountry camping and hiking trips, spanning the Badlands and Buffalo Gap National Grassland to the granite spires of the Black Hills. I typically stage at Badlands Interior Campground just outside Badlands National Park—the closest spot to the park where campfires are permitted—and range across the Badlands, Custer State Park’s Needles Highway and Sylvan Lake, and up to Black Elk Peak, the state high point. Over multiple visits, summer storms and early-morning fog have shaped the light across buttes, prairie, and the Black Hills.
