Iron Range

Industrial infrastructure and signage across Minnesota’s Iron Range, from Polymet operations to power plants and safety warnings

This photo set documents industrial sites and public signage across Minnesota’s Iron Range, including Polymet/Glencore operations in the Erie Basin near Hoyt Lakes, LTV Steel signage in Babbitt, a Polymet NorthMet Project sign, a sign reading "Extreme Fire Danger" "Please be careful!", graffiti on a rusted wall, and the smokestacks of the Hibbing power plant. Images show processing buildings, tailings basins, company signs, safety messaging and aging utility infrastructure. The Polymet project proposes recovery of copper and nickel from taconite tailings and has been subject to regulatory review and public comment. The photographs document materials and structures tied to the region’s mining economy and current debates over environmental protections and energy infrastructure.
