The Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building operated as the Fergus Falls State Hospital, opening in 1890 and later renamed the Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center before its closure in 2005. Designed under the Kirkbride Plan, a 19th-century model for asylum architecture that emphasized natural light and structured living spaces for patient treatment, the complex included recreational facilities such as this gymnasium to support therapeutic and physical activity programs for residents. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
