Attacks on Minnesota legislators

The murder of Melissa Hortman and attempted murder of John Hoffman and his wife.

Memorials appeared across the Twin Cities in the days following the targeted shootings of Minnesota lawmakers. State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed at their Brooklyn Park home on June 14, prompting a statewide investigation and a large-scale manhunt for the suspect, Vance Boelter. Authorities later said Boelter is also accused of shooting State Senator John Hoffman and his wife at their home the same night. In the days that followed, flowers, notes, flags, and campaign signs accumulated outside Hortman’s residence and at the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul. Supporters, residents, and fellow lawmakers left tributes remembering her work in the Minnesota House and her long career in public service. The memorials became gathering points for reflection as the investigation unfolded and communities across Minnesota responded to the violence directed at elected officials.
