The Fergus Falls Kirkbride Building, part of the former Fergus Falls State Hospital, was built between 1888 and 1902 following the linear-plan design principles of psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride. Architect Warren B. Dunnell designed the Romanesque Revival structure, which once housed patients in a system of staggered wings meant to maximize light and ventilation. The hospital operated under state control until the 1990s, when the Kirkbride building was largely vacated as mental health treatment shifted to smaller regional facilities. Long corridors like this one connected patient wards, day rooms, and staff offices along the building's extended footprint. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has remained mostly unused since closure, with redevelopment proposals debated for decades.
