Park Street Station opened in 1897 as part of the Tremont Street Subway, the first subway system built in the United States. Today it serves as a transfer point between the Red Line and the Green Line, with connections to buses throughout downtown Boston. The station sits beneath Boston Common and Park Street, at the edge of the city's historic Freedom Trail. An elevator connects street level to the Red Line platforms, part of accessibility upgrades made to the station over the past several decades.
