Hennepin Avenue Road Construction

Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction at Lake Street in Uptown Minneapolis

Hennepin Avenue is a major thoroughfare running through the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis, intersecting with Lake Street in one of the city's most active commercial and cultural districts. Established in the 19th century, Hennepin Avenue has long served as a key route for transportation and commerce in Minneapolis, connecting downtown to the southwest neighborhoods and Lake of the Isles.

The recent multi-year reconstruction project focused on modernizing the corridor, addressing aging infrastructure, and redesigning the street to accommodate new bike lanes and dedicated transit lanes. These updates reflect ongoing efforts to enhance public transit, pedestrian safety, and cycling infrastructure in the city. The project also supported local businesses and preserved significant buildings, such as the historic Rainbow Building at Lake and Hennepin, originally erected by T.B. Walker’s Red River Lumber Company in 1910.

Today, Hennepin Avenue continues to function as an essential route for vehicles, public transit, cyclists, and pedestrians, with the updated corridor connecting local landmarks including the Uptown Theater, Namaste Cafe, and a range of independent shops and eateries. The area remains a vibrant hub for both transportation and urban life in Minneapolis.
