March 2022 Minneapolis teachers strike marches through downtown, Nicollet Mall
March 10, 2022 — Minneapolis, MN
Educators and support staff with Minneapolis Public Schools marched in downtown Minneapolis on March 10, 2022, during the districtwide teachers strike. The work stoppage began on March 8, 2022, and was organized by the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT Local 59) and Education Support Professionals (ESP). March routes included Nicollet Mall, a central pedestrian corridor in the city’s core.
Participants called for higher wages, smaller class sizes, and expanded student mental health and support services. The strike brought regional attention to staffing, compensation, and resource challenges in one of Minnesota’s largest urban school districts and temporarily disrupted classes for thousands of families. City Council Member Robin Wonsley spoke at a related protest in support of the unions’ demands.
Marches traversed the central business district and Nicollet Mall, a frequent venue for public gatherings and labor protests in Minneapolis. The downtown setting amplified visibility for the unions’ contract campaign and highlighted the strike’s impact on district operations and city life.
