WinStar Riverboat Casino on the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal
WinStar riverboat casino docked on Indiana Harbor Ship Canal in East Chicago, Indiana.
The WinStar was a riverboat casino vessel built for Ameristar Casino East Chicago, docked along the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal in East Chicago, Indiana. Indiana's 1990s riverboat gaming law required licensed casinos to operate from vessels rather than land-based buildings, prompting construction of purpose-built boats like this one along Lake Michigan's industrial harbors. The Indiana Harbor Ship Canal connects to Lake Michigan and runs past steel mills and other heavy industry that predate the casino by decades.
