Parque Central sits at the heart of Antigua Guatemala, laid out when the city was founded as Santiago de los Caballeros in 1543. The square's centerpiece, the Fuente de las Sirenas, was cast in 1739 and remains one of the few colonial fountains in the Americas still in its original location. The Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, seat of Spanish colonial governors for Central America, lines its western edge, while the Antigua Cathedral and the Ayuntamiento building border the other sides. UNESCO listed Antigua Guatemala as a World Heritage Site in 1979, citing the preserved layout of its historic center, of which this plaza forms the core.
