Tokyo Station's Marunouchi facade dates to the original station building completed in 1914 and designed by architect Tatsuno Kingo, whose domed pavilions anchor each end of the red-brick structure. The station sustained heavy damage in a 1945 air raid and wasn't fully restored to its prewar three-story form until a 2012 renovation. It remains the terminus for the Tokaido Shinkansen and several JR lines, handling hundreds of thousands of passengers daily. The Marunouchi district around it grew into one of Tokyo's principal business centers, and the station now sits framed by high-rise towers built long after Tatsuno's design was completed.
