Clapham North WWII Deep Shelter Tunnel
This tunnel beneath Clapham North is one of eight deep-level shelters constructed by London Underground during World War II. Built between 1940 and 1942, these reinforced cylindrical passages could accommodate up to 8,000 people during air raids, featuring essential amenities like bunks and lavatories. The distinctive bolted cast-iron lining, a common feature of wartime tunnel construction, remains intact and is illuminated by later additions of fluorescent lighting. After the war, these tunnels served various purposes, including temporary housing and archival storage, and today stand as a well-preserved example of London's wartime civil engineering resilience.
