Chestnut and white Cavalier King Charles Spaniel resting its head on a couch cushion indoors. — The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed developed in England, named for King Charles II, whose fondness for the small spaniels made them fixtures of the royal court in the 17th century. The breed carries blenheim, tricolor, black-and-tan, and ruby coat variations, with the chestnut-and-white pattern shown here classified as blenheim. Adults typically weigh between 13 and 18 pounds, making them one of the larger toy breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. Bred originally as lap companions rather than working dogs, they remain popular household pets valued for their affectionate temperament.

Brown and white Cavalier King Charles Spaniel standing in snow. — The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed developed in England and named for King Charles II, whose fondness for small spaniels shaped the breed's early history. Bred primarily as a companion dog, it typically stands 12 to 13 inches tall and weighs between 13 and 18 pounds. The breed is recognized in four color patterns, including the red-and-white Blenheim seen here, named after the Duke of Marlborough's estate where the coloring first became popular. Long, feathered ears and a silky coat are hallmarks of the breed, traits inherited from its spaniel ancestors bred for flushing game.
