On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin murdered 46-year-old George Floyd during an arrest outside Cup Foods at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in south Minneapolis. Video recorded by bystanders showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes while Floyd repeatedly said he could not breathe. Three other Minneapolis police officers - J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao also faced criminal charges for their roles in Floyd’s death.

Burned Minneapolis Police Station 6 years later — The Minneapolis police third precinct police station 6 years after it was burned by protesters on May 28th, 2020 following the murder of George Floyd. Recently, the building has been going through renovation to be re-opened as the “Minneapolis Democracy Center”. The plan is for it to be the home of the Election & Voter Services with a large community center. The city purchased a building about a mile away that it plans to develop into a new police station. Minneapolis police have been using the City of Lakes building in Downtown Minneapolis as it’s temporary 3rd precinct station for quite a few years now. Prior to that, it set up shop inside the Minneapolis Convention Center. Signs on the fencing around the precinct read: “SAY HIS NAME”, “YOU MUST BE BOLD, BRAVE, COURAGEOUS AND FIND A WAY TO GET IN THE WAY”, “WE REMEMBER GEORGE FLOYD”.
