Clapham South Shelter: WWII Pressure Control Panel
This pressure control and alarm panel is a remnant of the Clapham South deep-level shelter, a crucial component of London's World War II civil defense infrastructure. Constructed 36 meters underground and completed in 1942, the shelter was designed to protect up to 8,000 civilians from air raids. The panel, marked for Shafts 9 and 10, monitored vital life-support systems including air pressure, fire mains, and CO₂ levels. Its robust steel and cast-iron construction, along with visible signs of wartime paint, underscore the industrial engineering and resilience that characterized London's wartime survival efforts.
