Minneapolis Uprising — 2020

A month-by-month index for 2020 within the Minneapolis Uprising documentation.

2020 in Minneapolis marked a historic uprising that reshaped the city and reverberated globally. After the murder of George Floyd on May 25, thousands of protesters gathered in south Minneapolis demanding accountability and changes to policing. What began as localized protest quickly escalated into sustained unrest, placing Minneapolis at the center of an international movement for racial justice.

In the days following Floyd’s death, protesters filled streets near the Third Precinct and along Lake Street. Clashes with law enforcement, property damage, and the burning of the Minneapolis Police Third Precinct police station building defined the final week of May. Neighborhood corridors suffered heavy destruction, even as community members mobilized to protect local institutions, distribute supplies, and document events as they unfolded.

Through June and into the remainder of 2020, protest activity continued across Minneapolis. George Floyd Square at 38th Street and Chicago Avenue emerged as a permanent memorial and gathering site, symbolizing both mourning and sustained demands for systemic change. Marches, community meetings, and policy debates carried into summer and fall, shifting from emergency response to long-term reform efforts. By year’s end, Minneapolis was navigating rebuilding efforts, political realignment, and an ongoing reckoning over the future of policing.
