The Foshay Tower rises 447 feet and 32 stories above downtown Minneapolis, completed in 1929 by insurance magnate Wilbur Foshay as a monument to his own business empire modeled after the Washington Monument. Foshay's fortune collapsed within weeks of the building's lavish opening celebration, a casualty of the stock market crash, and he was later convicted of fraud. The tower held the title of tallest building in Minneapolis until the IDS Center surpassed it in 1972, and it now operates as a hotel with an observation deck on its 30th floor. In the foreground, Century Plaza — a former Federal Reserve Bank building — is being converted into the Minneapolis Police Department's new 1st Precinct headquarters, relocating the precinct from its longtime home a few blocks away.
