George Air Force Base operated near Victorville, California, from 1941 until its closure under the 1991 Base Realignment and Closure Act, with the base shutting down in 1992. Housing units built for officers and enlisted families were left standing after the closure, and many have sat vacant for decades since. The base's residential blocks, once maintained by the Air Force, fell under the control of various redevelopment agencies as plans for reuse stalled repeatedly over the years. Broken windows and overgrown yards mark many of these former quarters, remnants of a military community that once numbered in the thousands during the Cold War era.
