Shimbashi Station's Yurikamome terminal marks the starting point of the automated line that opened in 1995 to link central Tokyo with the reclaimed land of Odaiba. The elevated guideway runs on rubber tires rather than steel rails, a design chosen to navigate the tight curves and steep grades of the waterfront route. Trains operate without drivers, guided by automatic train control from a operations center rather than onboard staff. The line covers about 14.7 kilometers between Shimbashi and Toyosu, stopping at 16 stations along the way, including Odaiba Kaihinkoen and the artificial island of Daiba.
